Can a 5V, 8W USB Soldering iron really solder? Well, we 'll see.
When it gets to Soldering, it's all about the heat. And heat is all about power dissipation.
So when I first saw this 5V, 8W Soldering iron on the internet, my first response like yours is "Can that really be?" But it won't hurt to test it out though. Or will it? So I ordered and it came and this is what I got. More like a writing pen, isn't it?
After a couple of tests, it passed, it really really passed. In fact, after using it, I am not sure I want to use a big iron no more. Not only does it not flash heat in my face while Soldering, it's also very light and using it feels like writing with a pen.
So the question is how is this mere 8W Soldering iron doing what a 40/60W iron does.
Heat concentration, the bullseye
A conventional Soldering iron has its heater element in the main body of it and a solid plated iron rod conducts this heat to the tip. While this approach merits from heat storage, it causes a lot of power grab being used by the iron. Implication is that not all 60W consumed by the element is present at the Soldering tip. Our 8W Soldering iron rather has its heater element situated at the very tip of the iron itself. This position also speed up the heating rate/time of the iron to a mere 15s.
Less iron, less iron
The heavy iron metal used in the 60W contemporary hogs heat. Now hogging may be good sometimes, because while it drastically increase the heating time of the iron, it also helps the iron retain its heat for an ample time after power outage. But our 8W friend strive for a low metal body and this helps it heat up fast and also cool down fast. One more good thing about this iron is its power management and safety scheme in idle or standby mode when not in use. The iron features a vibration sensor that it uses to know when the user stops using it and safely turn itself off. When you want to use it again simply pick it up, tap the tip and it powers itself up again. You can even chose to power it from the USB port of your laptop or get it a power bank of its own. On a 30000mAh power bank, this is expected to work theoretically for as long as 18hour on continuos usage. And coupled with the standby mode, you get almost double of that time or so from this damsel.
5V, 8W power consumption
Heat up in 15s
Cool down in about 15s
